FLOW provides $4m 'top up' for Penn Relays

Calabar High principal, Albert Corcho, has hailed telecommunications giant FLOW for its foundation's 23rd consecutive sponsorship of high school teams to the annual Penn Relays in Pennsylvania. The meet will be staged, April 28 to 30.

Yesterday FLOW announced a 16 per cent increase in its donations to schools which will travel to the prestigious meet. A total of 28 high schools, colleges and universities will share $4,030,000 in sponsorship from FLOW this year.

Corcho thanked the FLOW Foundation on behalf of all the schools.

"I am so happy, and I speak ... on behalf of the entire school population. I think, as principals, we all know how hard it is to fund these trips that you can't budget for," outlined the Calabar principal.

"The ministry (education) will tell you that you cannot put a Penn Relays trip in your budget. They will not approve the budget, so we have to find creative ways, and I think what FLOW has done in the last 23 years has, in a very big way, helped the schools to offset this huge cost," Corcho added.

Errol Miller, executive chairman of the FLOW Foundation, described the sponsorship as "the high point of our activities".

"We have been supporting the teams going off to the Penn Relays long before everyone of these high schoolers were born," he joked, adding that amid inflation, FLOW continues to give young Jamaicans a platform through sports.
